Children and vultures playing in the dumps
It is hard to understand the depth of what everyday life must be like for the poorest of the poor, outcasts of society, living amongst the ashes of the natural spontaneous combustion which occurs frequently in this garbage dump: methane and sulphur gases combine and erupt keeping a continual hovering of thick gaseous smoke in the air. Yet for the children, who by no fault of their own live here, it is just another day. They help to search for anything profitable, their hands and faces a penetrated black from extensive exposure to digging in ashes without cleansing. The blacker their hands - it represents a hard worker in the search. When new trucks deliver new garbage, there is an excitement and a scurry to get to work in the search. Searching for treasure!
And that is exactly what our group did too! We searched for God's Treasure there that day in the hearts of the people. He sees them as pure and holy, just like us, all His children. The new toothbrushes we handed out were such a hit. Thank you to those who donated them. Who knows what the toothbrushes look like that they used prior...or even if they used any. But a wrapped, new toothbrush was a favorite to be received that day.
"He picks up the poor from out of the dirt, and rescues the wretched who have been thrownout with the trash." Psalm 113:7 The Message Bible
